Today we did our shopping for the sports clinic that we will be doing in the Ocean View Community. We were much more efficient this time having experience at it from last week. I am very excited to meet the kids tomorrow and gear up for some more sports!
Today we also went with Sharon to visit a safehouse called S-cape home. It is apart of an organization called Justice Acts that fights human trafficking. We talked with some of the women who run the home to learn more about what they do. They have quite a network with local social workers and other NGOs (non-governmental organizations) like "Not for Sale" who also fight human trafficking. Often girls that are underage and taken out of the sex slave trade have no place to go and so S-cape gives them a place to stay short term as well as long term. It was interesting to see the safe house firsthand. An interior designer had actually decorated the whole place up and it felt very warm and cozy. A nice place for healing. I can't imagine what these girls have been through but it's encouraging to see people reaching out a hand and offering support.
Sharon is passionate about this organization and is putting on a fundraiser in the fall to help out with the funds. I originally was going to get involved with it until the fundraiser was postponed but Calvin will still be helping out with it. The fundraiser will be a spin-a-thon which is where teams of 5-6 are sponsored to cycle on a stationary bike for 24 hours. For every hour time slot, a sponsor gives a certain donation. Its a pretty awesome idea (and pretty tiring as well).
